Hello! My name is Dr. Chauntelle Tibbals, Sociologist at Large.

Sociology is the study of humans interacting in and with society, so basically what I do is try to make sense of patterns and processes I see occurring in social behavior. I look at how those patterns and processes impact individuals and how, in turn, individuals impact society.

It’s been through conventional scholarship combined with community involvement and advocacy work that I have come to think of myself as both an embedded public sociologist and a social justice-informed critical cultural commentator. My work addresses an array of human social issues, ranging from gender and sexualities to technology, media, sports, interpersonal relationships, the workplace, and so much more.

Dr. Chauntelle Tibbals is a sociologist specializing in gender, sexualities, work and organizations, media and technology, and popular culture. Dr. Chauntelle’s research has been published in numerous scholarly journals, and she has been quoted and cited extensively by cultural and news media outlets.

Research

My research over the past decade has centered around an extremely varied and volatile topic – the socio-cultural significance of adult content and adult content production. Unlike many scholars out there with an interest or emphasis in this dimension of sex work, I have spent (and continue to spend) quite a bit of time in and around the adult production/entertainment industry. Through understanding both the scholarly/theoretical and real-world sides of the adult business, my work aims to shed fresh critical light on a very influential and highly stigmatized component of our contemporary culture.

Background

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. I completed my undergraduate degrees and Master’s in the LA area (UCLA and CSUN respectively) but went to Texas for my PhD. I began working on my doctoral degree at UT Austin in 2004 and defended my dissertation in the spring of 2010.

I have a PhD in Sociology and a portfolio in Women’s & Gender Studies (a portfolio is kind of like a doctoral minor). My areas of interest – where I focus a lot of my scholarly energy – include gender, sexualities, work and organizations, media and new media, popular culture, and qualitative research methods. I was a Visiting Scholar in USC’s Department of Sociology during 2012 – 2013.

In my infinite free time (jk), I work on further developing my writing and research, cultivating my very dedicated yoga practice, and running running running (I love to run!). I’m also dog momma to two beautiful pitbull-type rescue dogs — Mini-Tank and the Pink Dog. You can read more about the Pink Dog here.
